From here, you can jump into tools that are specific to the areas you're interested in exploring. ![]() To help you better understand your frame, this year we've created a new summary view with the information about a frame in one convenient location, giving you quick access to an overview of encoders, performance numbers and memory usage. Once you're at a frame that you wanna debug, simply click on the camera icon in the debug bar. In Xcode, make sure to first enable GPU Frame Capture under the scheme options, and then run your Metal app. Let's take a closer look at each of the tools. It lets you deep dive into your render pipeline and helps to diagnose issues at an API level. The Metal Debugger in Xcode is a powerful toolset for capturing and debugging a single frame of your app. First up is the Metal Debugger, which you'd typically use when you're GPU-bound. In this session, we're gonna dig around in the Metal toolbox and discover what's available in the Metal Debugger and Metal System Trace.Īt the end, we're gonna have a sneak peek at an upcoming game from Larian Studios, and then I'll show you how you might investigate it with the tools. We're gonna be going through them today, and once you use them, I hope that you'll be able to deliver amazingly optimized, beautiful apps and games to people all over the world. We've got a bunch of great Metal tools that can guide you and help to reduce some of that complexity. And that probably sounds a bit daunting, especially if you're new to the Apple platform. These days, the rendering pipeline is increasing in complexity, with potentially hundreds of render passes. Hi, I'm Sam Colbran from the GPU Software team at Apple, and today we're gonna be talking about Metal tools and how they can help you gain insights into your apps in the world of Apple GPUs. Macbook color picker3/2/2024 ![]() Now we can select our new color palette in the macOS picker. Shockingly Microsoft PowerPoint actually uses the macOS picker so I used that.Ĭlick the three little dots next to the drop down for selecting color palettes and choose “Open…” to import the CLR file. Jump over to any app that supports the Apple Color Picker. Import the CLR file into Apple’s Color Picker This will be used with the Apple Color Picker.Ĥ. Keep the ColorWell palette window open and hit the little export icon on the bottom to generate the CLR file. Click the little import icon at the bottom and choose the JSON file we just made. Go into ColorWell and open the palette window. It’s just a list of hex codes for the colors. I love this because it’s self documenting. Another little bit of joy for an inexpensive and useful app.ĬolorWell can import a pretty simple JSON format to load a palette of colors. ColorWell has a preference to manually refresh the database to add new names to the app. Not because I care about accurate names, but because it adds a tiny bit of joy to color a slide title “God of Rain” or to set an outline as “squant”. I especially enjoy the ColorWell integration with the Color Names repo. It also has a very nice palette generator to make new color schemes. It displays a color palette and pretty much every piece of meta data for that color that I will never use. Since this is not a space I regularly play in I was unaware that this is the exchange format Apple uses with the Color Picker app. It’s most important feature is the option to export a CLR file. None really did what I wanted until I found ColorWell on the AppStore. There are a lot of these on the AppStore and a ludicrous amount on the internet. I looked at many color pickers for macOS. I want to be able to create a palette of colors that I can use with the Apple color picker. I want to add colors by hex code because that’s the most accurate way to add a set of known colors. Many of the apps I tried to use have an eyedropper tool to add colors to a palette. I have some oddball requirements for all of this. Here’s my runbook for creating one easily and also backing it up as a simple JSON file. Here’s what it looks like:Ĭreating a custom palette in Apple’s Color Picker was far more difficult than I expected. macOS has a built in color picker that allows for multiple color palettes and I thought that would be perfect. Last week I was creating a presentation and wanted to use brand colors throughout. Andy daly sha na na3/2/2024 ![]() Pepping it up, vocalist Donny York took the lead for an energetic stomp through Elvis Presley’s 1961 hit “(Marie’s The Name) His Latest Flame.” The Surfaris’ classic instrumental “Wipe Out” pumped the crowd further, complete with the famed ferocious drum breaks being replicated easily by Jocko Marcellino and epileptic dancing fits from guitarist Henry Gross. Versions of The Del-Vikings’ “Come Go With Me” and The Rays’ “Silhouettes” showcased the group’s strained-but-sincere harmonies before the gold lame-clad vocalist Rob Leonard stepped forward to deliver the lead on a severely tongue-in-cheek version of Mark Dinning’s teen tragedy classic “Teen Angel.” The crowd roared with appreciative laughter. Their set began with a ripping version of The Silhouettes’ “Get A Job,” their speed-freak intensity impressive considering the early hour, and the stunned audience gave them an effusive ovation. Somehow or other, this group of greasers-with a healthy dose of wink thrown into their act-snuck onto the Woodstock bill as the festival’s penultimate act. Contemporary groups such as The Mothers of Invention and Fleetwood Mac regularly incorporated similar ’50s throwback segments into their acts, but these were more straight parodies and none of the others took it quite this far. Complete with leather jackets, greasy ducks-ass hairstyles, and gold lame suits for its front line members, the band went for it, bringing back deceptively simplistic early rock in an era dominated by more progressive musicians (such as the bemused gentleman watching Sha Na Na from the side of the stage, Jimi Hendrix). One can only imagine the shock and surprise that must have come over the audience when Sha Na Na walked onto the stage. Having been up all night rocking out and partying, the crowd-or what was left of it-was pretty beat by 7:45 am. ![]() By chance, Woodstock promoter Michael Lang happened to catch one of these early shows and offered the chance for Sha Na Na to have their big break at Woodstock. They quickly caught the attention of the hip cognoscenti such as Fillmore promoter Bill Graham, who would have Sha Na Na open for heavyweight counterculture acts such as the Grateful Dead and Frank Zappa’s Mothers of Invention at the Fillmore East. Sha Na Na began performing in New York City clubs in 1969. They added Joe Witkin (keyboards), Henry Gross and Elliot Cahn (guitars), Bruce “Bruno” Clark (bass), and Jocko Marcelino (drums) to their large vocal lineup, dressed in gold lamé and leather jackets, and slicked back their hair, and Sha Na Na was born. The name change was necessary because there was already a group by that name, famous for their version of the garage band classic, “Louie Louie.” The name Sha Na Na was taken from the 1957 song, “Get a Job,” by the Silhouettes, which became part of their repertoire. Sha Na Na was the creation of Columbia University students Donald “Donny” York, Rob Leonard, Alan Cooper, Frederick “Dennis” Green, Dave Garrett, Richard “Richie” Joffe, and Scott Powell, who were part of an a cappella group known as The Kingsmen. With gold lamé and gold boots, jeans and rolled-up shirt sleeves, and lots of greasy hair, Sha Na Na took the stage on Monday morning at Woodstock. Performed Monday morning, August 18, 7:45–8:15 am Performing songs from the 1950s and looking nothing like the young people in the audience, they danced, dit-dit-dited, and doo-wopped their way through a high-energy half-hour set that left people delighted and bewildered.Ĭelebrating the 50th anniversary of the Woodstock festival, August 1969–2019 Day Three, Performer 9: Sha Na Na ![]() Rock ’n’ Roll tribute band Sha Na Na wins everyone’s prize for the most out-of-place act at Woodstock. Finally, there’s a hidden panel of pots for fine-tuning and modding the sound, all of which sound great. ![]() We especially liked adding slow, wonky pitch drifts to our acid lines but fast, buzzy effects are possible too. There’s also a comprehensive distortion section with vibrato, the latter of which works in tandem with the sequencer. With sine, square and ramp options at 0, -1 and -2 octaves, it’s perfect for bringing back the bass that high resonance settings will invariably steal. Most software emulations of the 303 have extras, for sure, but Arturia’s are especially welcome. Image: Arturiaįrom here on out, Arturia – as the company is wont to do – has gone to town adding new parameters to flesh out the original concept and make it more useful for modern productions. This works differently in practice than the original hardware, but we’ll address that when we come to the sequencer. Basic controls, including the waveform selector (sawtooth or square) for the single oscillator, then cutoff, resonance, filter envelope mod amount, decay and accent run in a line across the top, while the bottom is occupied by the LED-festooned keyboard. When you first open Acid V, you’re greeted with a user interface that should be instantly familiar to any acid head. The 303’s combination of simple yet powerful synthesis architecture and unique on-board sequencer has resulted in countless psychedelic dance records, with every subsequent generation rediscovering its power and charm.Īrturia has captured that power and charm extremely well. Pro tools 11 vs cubase 83/2/2024 I also know pt well and can use it with my eyes closed and it’s the getting up to speed on a new daw that I’m likely to get frustrated with… I did think I can run most synths from the pro tools side, as most of my music is centred around them and run the other midi gear from the Atari, such as the jv1080 and a couple of other midi rack units as I tend to go to them as after additions to music rather than the beginning… at least then, the Atari still has a place. I agree pro tools always wants to rule the roost… I’ve currently got the Atari chasing and that seems to work fine but as far as sequencing/programming goes, it is just a bit annoying to have to tune the pro tools to sequence in the Atari and if I just run the Atari to speed up programming etc, I obviously lose what’s on the pro tools in the process which half the time, is what I’m playing against… I can’t decide if I want to get another daw or not. I feel that, if space was no problem then I’d be ok, I could have all screens etc alongside each other but till that happens, why do I feel like it’s almost really a shame that I want to go back to just Pro tools?! Anyone else out there run a similar rig and found any boggles or workarounds? Or is it a case of stop whinging and just go with pro tools? I suppose there’s a reason pro tools took over… Check Capterra to compare Pro Tools and SOUND FORGE based on pricing, features, product details, and verified reviews. Now I find it somewhat less smooth and intuitive, granted I always preferred Notator and was less into Cubase but I’ve had trouble finding a Notator dongle to help but mainly it’s the two machines splitting jobs and having to run pt almost like the transport controls to sequence in the Atari. I got them all synced up and had a test go at tune making and found it oddly awkward… before, when it was just PT I could run midi sequencing and record etc all on the one screen, most of my music is easily covered by Pt and it’s midi. In my mind this seemed like the dream rig. Cubase 8 combines powerful tools from Nuendo with new. I recently pulled out the Atari st and cubase and decided to let that run most of the midi duties and let pro tools be the ‘tape machine’ along with some soft synths and chase the Atari to it. Pro package, which bundles together all of Emagics software instruments and effects. NATIVE: Pro Tools Native 9,10,11,12 (retail of EDU). midi to the digital synths and some skill analogue synths too and of course the modular. Sleeker, more efficient, more creative and offering new audio tools and instruments, Cubase Pro 8. The deepest and probably the most complicated to truly master as well. From the standpoint of qty of features and versatility, Cubase is a superior DAW. It looked like it was 250 more for pro vs artist. I feel like I’m in a moral dilemma… I’m running pro tools (not hd but expanded none the less) and have used it for work editing dialogues for yonks now and also used it till recently to do my music stuff on. If you have pro tools you can get the crossgrade to Cubase Pro for only like 20 or 40 bucks more than artist. Cataplexy narcolepsy dogs3/2/2024 ![]() Spontaneous episodes of sleep and cataplexy occurred as the dogs rested undisturbed in the sling. No attempt was made to trigger cataplexy by presenting food, water, or other stimuli. The dogs could see only the wall of the laboratory, ~ 3 feet away. The experiments were performed between 08 h in a quiet room with a low level of natural light. The subjects were trained to stand quietly in a sling (Chatham Medical Arts) that supported most of their weight. In dog #142 respiration was recorded with a thoracic strain gauge. A cardiotachometer was employed to display heart interbeat intervals derived from the blood pressure pulse wave. Blood pressure was recorded with a Statham pressure transducer and was displayed on a polygraph along with EEG, EOG, and EMG. The catheter was flushed with heparinized saline every 12 h and a continuous flow of 4 cc/h of heparinized saline was maintained during recording sessions using a Sorenson valve. It was led subcutaneously to terminate on the dog’s head plug. A Swan-Ganz 5F catheter was inserted through the femoral artery and guided into the descending aorta. Stranded stainless steel wires were inserted into the dorsal neck musculature for recording the electromyogram (EMG). Screw electrodes were also placed in the orbit or frontal bone for recording the electro-oculogram (EOG). Using Halothane anesthesia, the dogs were implanted with screw electrodes over sensorimotor and posterior lateral cortex for recording electroencephalograms (EEGs). The dogs were Doberman and Labrador crossbreeds and were transported from the Stanford Narcoleptic Dog Colony to Los Angeles, where the studies were conducted. ![]() One male (#142) and two female (#139 and 141) puppies aged from 3 to 4 months served as subjects. In this study we have examined such changes in genetically narcoleptic dogs ( 1). Therefore, it is of considerable interest to determine if cardiovascular changes accompany cataplectic attacks. Sachs and Kaijser ( 7, 8) have reported that narcoleptic patients have reduced reactivity in the cardiovascular system. Scrima ( 6) has hypothesized that a similar activation of the baroreceptors may trigger cataplexy in human narcolepsy. This was followed by other signs of REM sleep. These workers found that in chronic encéphale isolé cats stimulation of the baroreceptors produced a loss of muscle tone resembling cataplexy. A series of studies by Puizzilout and colleagues ( 3– 5) provided some support for this hypothesis. Since such situations tend to increase heart rate, it has long been suspected that cardiovascular changes may be a triggering event in cataplexy. It is well known that cataplectic attacks in humans are often triggered by emotions such as laughter, anger, surprise, excitement, fear, and embarrassment and by sexual intercourse and athletic activity ( 1). Barney doll kidnapping3/1/2024 The next day, I was at the hospital getting checked out. I then realized that my son and wife were looking for me, which they realized I was missing. ![]() I didn't get home till later at night, which it was 8:00 at night. He then took the mask off and who it turned out to be was a man named " Oscar Waltonson ". But eventually, that pushed Barney away and managed to get through the door. This lasted for about at least 6 minutes or so. But Barney then tried to shut the door, but that police officer was fighting with him to get into the shed. He then yelled at Barney to come out of the shed with his hand up. Barney then goes to open it and what do you know, it was a police officer. Luckily, a few hours later, I heard a knock on the door. Barney then started laughing in a evil tone, like if he was a demon or something. When that metal thing triggered, it just about went through the back of my hand. He then immediately grabbed my hand and then placed it in a rat trap. I then begged for him to stop, but didn't do any good. Then, Barney said " Now this next game is called Hand In The Trap ". He then took his hammer and then instantly whacked my leg so hard that I started screaming on the top of my lungs. I then tried to get away, but I forgot to realize I was tied up with rope. He then said " Our first game we'll playing will be Whack The Leg ". I demanded him to tell me what was going on at this point, but his only answer was " I want to play with you. It was very dark at first, but then he turned the light on. But why was this happening, my favorite childhood character was kidnapping me, FOR REAL ! He then opens the door to the shed and then dragged me inside. I was then starting to get even more scared than I was earlier. It had red paint on the outside of it, which was peeling off and it only had one window, which had a visible crack on it. A couple minutes later, I saw an old abandoned shed in the middle of the woods. He then dragged me into the woods and kept telling me to shut up as I was screaming and yelling for help. Are you hurt ? Are you being kidnapped ? Please talk to me sir "! I then figured out what was going on, I was being KIDNAPPED by BARNEY THE DINOSAUR ! I then started screaming for help a dozen times, but nobody was around in the neighborhood. He then dragged me out of the house as I heard the dispatcher on my phone saying " Hello, sir. He immediately put his hand on my neck and then threw me onto the floor. But as I did that, Barney then grabbed me from the back of me. It was BARNEY THE DINOSAUR ! I then tried calling 911 to tell them that there was an intruder breaking into my house. I thought I lost him then, but then a few minutes later, I heard something break into my kitchen window. When I got to the house, I then opened the door and slammed it behind me. I then slowly backed away from Barney, but he then tried to grab a hold of me. But something felt a bit suspicious to me, because this Barney the dinosaur wouldn't say anything like that and he had a much deeper voice. But, what he only said was " Hello sir, its nice to meet you as well and we're gonna need you right now, so come with us ". As I walked up to him in excitement, I introduced myself to him and told him I was his biggest fan. ![]() Which that dream had turned into a nightmare. I've always dreamed of meeting him in person since I was a kid. Eventually when I got closer to the purple thing I was seeing, I realized it was Barney the dinosaur. I then walked a little quicker to get a closer look at what I was seeing. It was purple and green and it was only about five feet away from where I was walking. A few minutes later while I was walking, I spotted something familier in the distance. While I was at home watching some MTV, I got bored and decided to go for a walk through the neighborhood. It was the day where I had to drop off my 8 year old son Johnny to elementary school and my wife Elizabeth have to go to her work as a waitress in Cracker barrel. Okay here it goes.It all started with me and my family, just doing our every day stuff. Now let me tell you my story of how Barney the dinosaur almost killed me. Until this one day, which changed my love for my favorite character, which was Barney. Its charming, funny, musical, and energetic at the same time. I used to be fanatic of Barney the dinosaur back when I was little boy. The upgrades are nice but when it comes to reading ebooks both models pretty much perform identically.None of them works well enough to be considered the "best." I guess Kobo really likes that design and didn’t feel like much needed changing. Most of the changes are very subtle, which is kind of surprising considering the Clara HD was released nearly four and a half years ago now. The Clara 2E has a blue back so it’s easy to tell it from behind, and they moved the power button from the bottom to the back, which helps avoid accidentally hitting the power button. Looking at them from the front the two are virtually indistinguishable from each other. It’s interesting how similar the Clara 2E is to the Clara HD. The difference is very subtle but it is noticeable under certain lighting conditions. The Clara 2E has a newer Carta 1200 screen, so blacks are a bit darker than the Clara HD, and it helps make the text stand out a little more. The overall dimensions are slightly different, just enough to make it so covers aren’t interchangeable: Kobo Clara HD measurements: 110 x 159.6 x 8.35 mm Kobo Clara 2E measurements: 112.05 x 159.02 x 8.66 mm.
